Allergies

For the safety of your family, this information is intended for use by North Seattle Pediatrics patients exclusively.

Symptoms of allergies may include:

  • Clear nasal discharge with sneezing and nasal itching
  • Eye allergy symptoms (itchy, pink and watery) are commonly associated (70%)
  • Symptoms occur during pollen season and recur yearly
  • Previous confirmation of this diagnosis by a physician is helpful
  • Excluded: fever or purulent nasal discharge

Antihistamines for Nasal Allergies

  • Antihistamines are the drug of choice for nasal allergies.
  • Antihistamines will reduce the runny nose, nasal itching and sneezing.
  • Long-Acting (LA) antihistamines, such as Zyrtec or store brand cetirizine, that last up to 24 hours are preferred. Age limit (US): 6 months and older.
    • Cetirizine dosing for 6 months to 2 years (US): 2.5 mL (2.5 mg) every 24 hours. For 2 years and older, follow package directions for dosing.
