From the Office of Immunization and Child Profile.
Washington State Department of Health. On May 10, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for ages 12-15, based on data showing a high degree of efficacy and safety of the vaccine in this age group. This is the first step to making the vaccine available to this age group in Washington. The next step is for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and the Western States Scientific Safety Workgroup, to meet on Wednesday May 12, 2021, to review the data and make recommendations.
Expanding vaccine eligibility will help protect our kids, families, and our communities. We know that many are eager to vaccinate their children, we encourage parents and providers to schedule appointments Thursday afternoon or later once we expect the full recommendations to be released. There is nothing that prohibits vaccinating now that there is an Emergency Use Authorization, however insurance may not cover the administration fee until there is an ACIP recommendation.
